Alfresco Cloud Sync Replacement – AlfStream
Goodbye, Alfresco Cloud Sync 🙁
There has been much change in the land of Alfresco: staff in and out, new regional pricing, a sale to private equity, as well as many feature retirements.
In this blog, we will cover off one of the upcoming feature retirements – Cloud Sync, a favourite feature that helps organisations collaborate efficiently and securely with third parties: Architecture changes for Alfresco Content Services version 6.0 and beyond
Alfresco Cloud Sync empowered users to collaborate with external users, by publishing content to an external instance of Alfresco hosted in the US by Alfresco itself. The documents were kept separately and synchronized when changes are made at either end. Cloud Sync enabled an organisation to collaborate, keep track of versions and have them automatically stored in their ECM, rather than use the nightmare of tracking versions in email trails.
Parashift’s AlfStream Alfresco Add-on means that the demise of Cloud Sync’s doesn’t need to be a game changer to the way you collaborate.
AlfStream is an Alfresco-to-Alfresco synchronization solution which uses stream processing. Changes are replicated from one instance to another in ‘near real time’. AlfStream’s synchronization solution ensures not only content but also its metadata are kept in sync, in a mono or multi-directional manner marrying the architecture of your Alfresco platform.
A key difference is AlfStream does not require your second site to reside in the US – it can be wherever you want. This removes any risk of data sovereignty that may exist.
Another use for AlfStream, in addition to being a Cloud Sync replacement, is for organisations with multi country representation. Clustered environments use real-time, so latency can be issue across locations spread out over vast geography. AlfStream minimises latency for day-to-day processing, by having an instance hosted in each location, with updates occurring without impacting usage.
